Ajax's Machlas in jail after police car chase 24 Apr 2003
Ajax striker Nikos Machlas who is currently on loan to Spanish side Seville, has been placed under custody for resisting arrest. The ex-golden-boot striker refused to give heed to police requests to stop after he had been stopped for reckless driving. Police spotted Machlas driving in the wrong direction on a one-way road. After a high speed chase Machlas was requested to get out of his car but refused and reportedly insulted and assaulted the officers who tried to arrest him. Machlas, who has often viewed his discontentment at not being given a chance to demonstrate his skills since arriving at Seville, will probably now have to sit out the rest of the season in jail.
